DPNM Praises President Biden’s Respect for Marriage Act

Even on Her Way Out, Republican Yvette Herrell Turns Her Back on the LGBTQ+ Community

Today, President Joe Biden signed the landmark Respect for Marriage Act into law, enshrining marriage equality protections for Americans. It builds on generations of civil rights advocacy to bring stability and security to millions of LGBTQ+ and interracial couples who will be guaranteed the rights and protections to which they and their children are entitled.
Every New Mexico Democrat voted for the bipartisan Respect for Marriage Act, however, lame-duck Republican Yvette Herrell voted against it. Despite losing the race for New Mexico’s Second District last month, Yvette Herrell already filed with the FEC to run again for NM-02 in 2024. Herrell’s vote against marriage equality is a betrayal of the LGBTQ+ community, mixed-race families, and the voters of the Second District.
Herrell was one of the 169 GOP Representatives and 36 GOP Senators who voted against the Respect for Marriage Act – despite more than 70% of Americans supporting same sex-marriage, including a majority of Republicans.
“Democrats have continued to be on the forefront of fighting for equality and we’re proud that every Democrat in our New Mexico delegation supported President Biden’s bipartisan Respect for Marriage Act. It’s a shame that Yvette Herrell still maintains a discriminatory stance on marriage equality even as she’s on her way out the door,” said Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Jessica Velasquez. “Yvette Herrell’s vote proves that Americans can’t count on the MAGA GOP to be there for the LGBTQ+ community.”
The Democratic Party of New Mexico proudly includes LGBTQ+ rights, including marriage equality, as part of our platform, and features our own LGBTQ+ Caucus.
Unlike DPNM, Steve Pearce’s Republican Party of New Mexico opposes marriage equality and stands against people being allowed to marry whom they love. Their website details their party’s archaic, discriminatory position: “We support a Constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between one man and one woman.” The NM GOP believes LGBTQ+ individuals deserve fewer rights and cannot be trusted to stand for equal protections for everyone under the law.
