House Bill 4 is a Historic Opportunity to Expand Voting Access in New Mexico
Albuquerque- The New Mexico House of Representatives passed the New Mexico Voting Rights Act (HB 4) on February 21, 2023. The Democratic Party of New Mexico released the following statement about House Bill 4:
“Protecting our fundamental right to vote is one of our core tenets as Democrats, which is why the Democratic Party of New Mexico is thrilled that New Mexico House Democrats passed the New Mexico Voting Rights Act. Democracy can only be as effective as we allow it, which is why this multifaceted bill is a historic step forward for voting access and security throughout all of New Mexico. Democrats are minimizing the hurdles people must endure to make their voices heard, thereby empowering more New Mexicans to vote without feeling intimidation.
With the 2022 election, New Mexico voters made it clear that they will reject attempts to undermine democracy or place barriers to voting. Now is our historic opportunity to strengthen democracy in our state to make sure every eligible voter can participate in free, fair and secure elections, no matter which community they are from.
As the Voting Rights Act advances through the legislature, we are confident that Democrats in the New Mexico Senate will stand for strengthening democracy within their districts and empowering their constituents to practice their right to vote by sending HB 4 to the Governor’s desk.
At DPNM, we are looking forward to seeing the New Mexico Voting Rights Act in action after it becomes law.”
