Mark Ronchetti Believes Women Should Be Punished and Extradited for Seeking Safe, Legal Abortion Care in New Mexico.
On Monday night, Mark Ronchetti announced he opposed Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s executive order that safeguards New Mexicans, New Mexico doctors, and individuals from other states seeking abortion care in New Mexico from extremist abortion bans passed by other states.
By opposing these critical protections, Ronchetti confirms that he believes women should be criminalized, including being extradited to and prosecuted in their home states, for seeking safe, legal abortion care in New Mexico.
Ronchetti may claim his new position is a “compromise”, but here’s the truth:
- His position prior to Friday was that abortion should be banned for “all stages” and in 2020 was endorsed by the National Right to Life, an extremist group that seeks to ban abortion without exceptions for rape, incest, and where the mother’s health is at risk.
- In response to the Supreme Court overturning Roe vs. Wade, Mark Ronchetti proposed an extreme 15-week abortion ban (the same ban pushed by Mississippi in the case to get Roe overturned) which he is trying to frame as a moderate. This is demonstrably false and is an attempt to cover up his far right position that would punish women and their doctors.
- When the Dobbs opinion was leaked in May, he praised the decision to overturn Roe. Ronchetti has always been against abortion.
- Ronchetti opposes insurance coverage for contraceptives like Plan B – a position that is harmful and dangerous to the millions of women who rely on that medicine. He attacked his primary opponent Rebecca Dow on this issue.
Ronchetti is a threat to abortion access, a threat to New Mexico doctors, and a threat to women. New Mexicans understand that any ban on abortion is too extreme for our state—and Ronchetti is an attempting to cover up his far right position that would punish women and their doctors.
