Albuquerque- As her unsuccessful record as a candidate shows, Republican candidate for New Mexico’s First Congressional District Michelle Garcia Holmes’ views are too extreme for voters who reject them time and time again. When it comes to reproductive rights, Garcia Holmes has a record of supporting extreme abortion bans and associating with the far-right.

In September of just last year, Garcia Holmes signed a pledge to end all abortion nationwide: “I pledge to defend life from conception to natural death. In making and keeping this pledge, I am committed to ending all abortion and all assisted suicide in the state of New Mexico.”

Like Republicans across the country, she’s avoiding talking about how extreme her unpopular abortion views are, but her past endorsements from the Susan B. Anthony List and the National Right to Life show where she stands. Both groups want to ban abortion entirely, even in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is at risk. The Susan B. Anthony List’s mission is to “end abortion” and believes abortion is “never medically necessary”, even to save the life of a mother. The National Right to Life’s general counsel said that a 10-year-old victim of rape should not have access to an abortion. Regardless, Garcia Holmes proudly touts these endorsements.

On the Albuquerque Journal Candidate Questionnaire, Garcia Holmes avoided giving a straight answer on the abortion question by saying she wants to end abortion in the third trimester. However, she left out that she supports banning all abortions nationwide without exceptions. She also has a troubling history of harassing the University of New Mexico for providing abortion care.

Recently, Garcia Holmes held a fundraiser hosted by extreme anti-abortion activists Bud and Tara Shaver and the Bernalillo County Republican Headquarters. The Shavers have been associated with anti-abortion group Operation Rescue and have a long history of anti-abortion campaigning in New Mexico.

She also opposed 2021 NM Senate Bill 10, which overturned New Mexico’s outdated abortion ban, preemptively protecting abortion access in New Mexico before the US Supreme Court’s Dobbs Decision. While a New Mexico State Representative, Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury voted for this bill, protecting choice in New Mexico.

“Michelle Garcia Holmes’ record speaks for itself – throughout her persistently unsuccessful serial candidacy, she’s opposed reproductive rights and aligned with the farthest right dangerous extremes of the GOP,” said Democratic Party of New Mexico Communications Director Daniel Garcia. “She’s promoted dangerous far-right conspiracies about the January 6th insurrection and spread false information about COVID-19 science. Michelle Garcia Holmes’ lack of experience and dangerously radical beliefs have no place in Congress, especially representing New Mexico’s First District.”
