AG Balderas, Rep. Lujan Grisham Jump Into Action Against Family Separation

NM Attorney General Hector Balderas is leading 21 states Attorneys General in challenging Trump’s family separation policy.

AP: “A coalition of Democratic attorneys general demanded Tuesday that the Trump administration end a ‘zero tolerance’ policy that has resulted in children being separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Led by New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas, 21 top state prosecutors from California to Massachusetts sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Tuesday, calling the policy inhumane and draconian.

“The letter raises concerns about the violation of children’s rights and constitutional principles of due process and equal protection.

“‘The U.S. Justice Department is ignoring its legal and moral obligation for the sake of a political agenda at the expense of children and the efforts of state law enforcement officials combating crimes like human trafficking, drug trafficking and gang violence which operate across international borders,’ Balderas said in a statement.”

Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham traveled to the border with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and took on the Trump Administration for their inhumanity.

Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham, yesterday: The family separation policy “is intended, unequivocally, not to just continue to punish asylum seekers and those seeking refuge constitutionally in this country by a system that is, in fact, broken. But instead of addressing those issues legitimately and productively and humanely, they are immorally now using these children and purposely enacting harm.”

“Let’s talk about who’s coming here. They are fleeing such horrific violence and rape. The kinds of conditions that every single one of us would run from in order to protect our children and our families. We reject them here and then we inflict the kind of pain where we separate them from their children and they have no idea what comes next.”
