Conspiracy Corner: New Mexico GOP Spreads Misinformation About Masks and Vaccines

As Governor Lujan Grisham Renews Common Sense Public Health Order, The GOP Continues To Push COVID-19 Conspiracies

Today, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham extended the Public Health Order that uses proven safety measures to keep New Mexicans safe. Over the last month following the reinstatement of the indoor mask mandate in response to the Delta variant, the New Mexico GOP continually spread conspiracy theories, misinformation, and pseudoscience, undermining public health and contributing to the transmission of COVID-19.

Republican leaders and GOP candidates for governor have consistently admonished the common-sense mask mandate—pandering to anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers, whose extremist views threaten vulnerable New Mexicans. GOP Gov-Hopeful Jay Block called the public health order “coercion” and “completely wrong.” Candidate for governor Louie Sanchez went even further, bragging that his shooting range and gun store Calibers is not complying with the mask mandate—making this the second time he has violated state law. State Senator Gregg Schmedes’ videos were removed from YouTube after he spread lies about masks, vaccines, and COVID-19’s danger to children—a clear violation of the company’s community guidelines.

The GOP is out of touch with the majority of New Mexicans who support Governor Lujan Grisham’s Public Health Order. The GOP’s rhetoric is reprehensible and they are responsible for any COVID-19 transmission in New Mexico that could have been prevented with masks, vaccinations, and common-sense safety measures.
