DPNM Condemned the New Mexico GOP’s Hypocritical Attacks on Candidate After He Confirmed Participating in an Adult Film
New Mexico GOP Chair Steve Pearce has launched an unacceptable and hypocritical attack on Democratic House District 40 candidate Roger Montoya in an attempt to shame a gay man for a choice made in the distant past, while ignoring Donald Trump’s long record of illicit conduct.
Roger Montoya is one of New Mexico’s foremost community advocates and has made an enormous impact on Northern New Mexico. Montoya has founded arts, education, and housing nonprofits and organized efforts to support families through the HIV and COVID-19 crises.
The New Mexico Democrats stand fully in support of Montoya in the face of these attacks, as do residents of the Española Valley. An outpouring of support has come in from voters on social media and from leaders in New Mexico including Speaker Brian Egolf, Senator Martin Heinrich, and DPNM Chairwoman Marg Elliston since the GOP launched its attack.
“I believe voters will make their decision on whom to support based on what they can offer their community. Roger Montoya is the clear and obvious choice,” said House Speaker Brian Egolf. “Roger has built a life of service and has worked tirelessly for decades to make the Española Valley and all of Northern New Mexico a better place for all. I support him wholeheartedly and I respect him, his courage, and his commitment to his community.”
“Roger Montoya has dedicated his life to his community and to creating a better future for the next generation, which is why I encouraged him to run for office,” said Senator Martin Heinrich. “If I were a 19 year old kid struggling with addiction or exploitation, Roger is exactly who I would want as a mentor. He has done more to support young people than anyone I know. I stand with Roger Montoya.”
The New Mexico GOP referred to Montoya’s behavior as “irresponsible” and “reckless” as well as “unbecoming of any candidate or elected official.” Pearce’s statement creates a double standard to which the New Mexico GOP has failed to hold their own candidates, including President Trump. In fact, President Trump has appeared in multiple adult films and allegedly paid a porn star $130,000 to remain silent after he cheated on his wife who had just given birth to their son.
“If Chairman Pearce truly believes that all candidates should be held to this moral standard, he should be calling for Donald Trump to drop out of the race as well,” said DPNM Chair Marg Elliston. “This is a hypocritical attempt to distract the voters of this district from the fact that Roger Montoya is by far the most qualified candidate in this race and the best person to fight for New Mexico’s hard working families.”
