Just yesterday, the Democratic State Central Committee (SCC) elected State Representative Melanie Stansbury as our party’s nominee to fill the vacancy left by Secretary Deb Haaland. Now, Democrats are coming together to put our full support behind Representative Stansbury as our party’s nominee in New Mexico’s first Congressional District.
Melanie Stansbury is a New Mexico State House Representative from Albuquerque that works as a science and policy consultant on projects to help build a more just and sustainable world. Rep. Stansbury has been a tireless champion in efforts to address hunger, food and water insecurity, economic development, public safety and community development, and environmental sustainability in New Mexico. Stansbury has worked in communities across the state as a researcher and STEM educator and at the national level as a former staffer in the White House Office of Management and Budget and committee staffer in the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. She is running for New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District to lift up the voices of our communities and tackle our biggest challenges from economic development, to food and water security, to climate change.
“We are so excited to support Melanie Stansbury in the race to become New Mexico’s next strong Democratic representative,” said DPNM Chair Marg Elliston. “Her dedication, compassion, and forward-thinking policies are exactly what New Mexicans are looking for in a leader. We look forward to turning out Democrats across this district and electing Representative Stansbury to carry on the legacy of Secretary Haaland by moving our state and our nation toward a brighter future.”
“I am honored and proud to be chosen as the Democratic nominee to run for New Mexico’s First Congressional District,” said State Representative and candidate for Congress Melanie Stansbury. “I am running for Congress because I believe deeply in our people and our ability to bring meaningful change. I have spent my career working at the local, state, and national level to address the issues that most affect our communities–from hunger and homelessness, to economic development and healthcare access, to water resilience and climate change. In Congress, I will fight for and center our communities’ needs in all of our work. Having grown up in Albuquerque, I know we have the grit, determination, and heart to get the job done.”
