Democrats across New Mexico are showing that #DemsCare with charitable drives and actions
Democrats across New Mexico are looking for ways to give back to their communities this holiday season. County parties across New Mexico are celebrating by collecting supplies or providing presents for those in need.
“DPNM works every day to create a New Mexico for All, and while our state has made incredible progress in the last year, there are still many families who are struggling,” said DPNM Chair Marg Elliston. “This holiday season we were proud to see so many of our county parties giving back to their communities by supporting local organizations. We encourage Democrats across New Mexico and the country to get involved this holiday season and put Democratic values into action.”
See some of the ways that Democrats are giving back to their communities this holiday season:
Taos County Democrats raised nearly $4000 to include paper goods such as toilet paper and paper towels in holiday baskets that were distributed to over 1,200 needy Taos county families through Taos Feed Taos.
They’re also collecting toys, winter clothing, socks and shoes for Sin Fronteras NM, who are bringing Christmas gifts to children in Juarez, Mexico as they wait with their relatives seeking asylum in the United States
Throughout the year, Taos County Democrats have participated in several drives and fundraisers to support causes like supporting furloughed federal workers, the Men’s Shelter, Moms Demand Action, and Community Against Violence.
“We’re always looking for ways to give back to our community, whether that’s through charitable giving, voter registration, or volunteer work,” said Taos County Democrats Chair Darien Fernandez. “This year we’re proud to have exemplified Democratic values by taking every opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of our fellow New Mexicans.”
The Democratic Party of Bernalillo County collected donations at their Third Thursday Holiday Potluck for the Transgender Resource Center’s Drop-in Center. TGRCNM’s Drop-in Center provides a safe space where New Mexico’s transgender community has access to critical resources, medical care, and assistance with finding employment.
“By supporting the Drop-in Center, we’re putting our Democratic values into action,” said Democratic Party of Bernalillo County Chair Flora Lucero. “Democrats in Bernalillo County are committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable future for New Mexico, and we’re proud to be working toward that goal both during the holidays and every day of the year.”
The Democratic Party of San Juan County held a drive to collect Christmas gift for children currently living in Farmington’s Family Crisis Center’s residential shelter. For over 40 years, Farmington’s Family Crisis Center has offered residential, counseling and educational services to San Juan County residents who have been the victims of domestic violence.
“San Juan County Democrats are honored to be able to supply Christmas gifts for the children who must live in this shelter during this holiday season,” said Democratic Party of San Juan County Chair MP Schildmeyer. “These donations are just one of the ways that we can work to support women and families in our community and across New Mexico.”
The Democratic Party of Sandoval County sponsored two families through PBJ Family Services this year, providing food, clothes, and housewares. PBJ serves more than 2,000 children and parents annually in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties by providing supportive services for the family as a unit.
“Sponsoring through PBJ was a great way to expand on our work to improve the lives of New Mexican families,” said Democratic Party of Sandoval County Chair John Sweda. “Democrats in Sandoval understand the importance of ensuring that every family has the opportunities and the resources they need to succeed. That’s why we’re proud to work every day toward creating a New Mexico for all.”
