In response to the three year anniversary of Donald Trump’s broken promise to preserve protections for preexisting conditions, Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Marg Elliston released the following statement:
“Our health and economic security have never been at greater risk, yet Donald Trump continues to break his promise to preserve coverage protections for more than 860,000 New Mexicans with a preexisting condition. Instead, he has attempted to invalidate the Affordable Care Act, spike costs, and jeopardize New Mexicans’ health coverage. Trump is leading a reckless attack on working families when we can least afford it, and he’s going to feel the consequences in November.”
BACKGROUND ON TRUMP’S BROKEN PROMISES
Promise: On April 30, 2017, Donald Trump promised that his health care agenda would lower premiums and preserve protections for Americans with preexisting conditions:
“Preexisting conditions are in the bill. And I mandate it. I said has to be. So, we have — we’re going to have lower premiums.”
“But when I watch some of the news reports, which are so unfair, and they say we don’t cover preexisting conditions, we cover it beautifully.”
Reality: Trump’s agenda puts 6.3 million Americans with preexisting conditions at risk for higher premiums.
Reality: Three years later, Republicans are waging a campaign to fully overturn the Affordable Care Act. If they succeed, as many as 133 million Americans with preexisting conditions could be denied coverage or charged higher rates — including more than 860,000 New Mexicans.
