DPNM Chair Will Not Seek Another Term

Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Marg Elliston announced today that she will not run for another term after her current tenure ends at the end of April. Elliston has served as chair for three years and led the Democratic party through two major election cycles, including campaigning in the time of a global pandemic.

Under her leadership New Mexico has elected strong leaders up-and-down the ballot and become a solidly blue state. In 2018 our party launched our New Mexico for All coordinated campaign, flipping the governor’s mansion and sweeping every statewide and federal office. In the recent 2020 elections, we delivered our electoral votes for President-elect Biden and continued to expand our lead in the Roundhouse.

Additionally, Chair Elliston has overseen the expansion of key programs that invest in the future of Democratic leadership by recruiting staffers, candidates, and volunteers. These programs include expanded training programs with fellowship and internship opportunities, and investments in county and ward-level Democratic infrastructure. She has also led our most successful fundraisers to date, including the annual Rising Star and Legislative Dinners.

As leader of the Democratic Party, Chair Elliston made a concerted effort to ensure that all Democrats were being heard. During her tenure, the party expanded Native Outreach programs, including bringing on a full time Native Outreach Organizer and launching Native Outreach fellowships. Chair Elliston also travelled to all 33 counties during her most recent term, meeting with Democrats in every corner of New Mexico.

When the COVID-19 pandemic upended political and personal life, forcing the party to completely revamp outreach efforts, Chair Elliston oversaw one of the quickest and most successful transitions to remote work and virtual outreach across the nation. This effort to continue the party’s work even during a global pandemic allowed us to keep working as a year-round, people-powered organizing machine despite these challenges.

“I’m so thankful for the wonderful opportunities that this position has given me to work alongside our leaders to make a difference in New Mexico,” said DPNM Chair Marg Elliston. “It’s been an honor to have been part of the effort to elect outstanding Democrats to our highest offices and to inspire activism in every county in New Mexico. I look forward to continuing to support the party and its new leadership as we work together to move New Mexico forward and stay blue!”
