The Democratic Party of New Mexico announced today that we have hired Sean Ward to fill the position of Executive Director. Sean will replace Chelsey Evans, who has worked at DPNM for five years. At the same time, DPNM will be promoting Tribal Outreach Organizer Kianna Holian to Organizing Director. In her new role, Kianna will oversee a staff of community organizers and focus on mobilizing Democrats across all of New Mexico’s diverse communities.
Sean is a native New Mexican, born in Sandia Park. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of New Mexico and a master’s degree in Political Management from George Washington University. Sean is an accomplished grassroots specialist with experience in electoral, issue-based, and union organizing campaigns. His past experience includes work for the Albuquerque Teachers Federation, Hillary for America, Bernie 2020, and the AFL-CIO. Most recently, Sean served as Field Director for the Melanie Stansbury campaign, where he oversaw the largest field program in NM-01 since 2010.
Kianna joined DPNM as the party’s first full-time Tribal Outreach Organizer in July 2020. As part of DPNM’s staff she has helped develop strong relationships with New Mexico’s sovereign nations and build infrastructure to increase Democratic capacity to engage Native voters. Kianna is a born and raised New Mexican with tribal affiliations including Cochiti Pueblo, Jemez Pueblo, and Navajo Nation.
“We are so excited to have both Sean and Kianna taking on new roles in the Democratic Party,” said DPNM Chair Jessica Velasquez. “Over the past several years we’ve seen how a strong state party can lay the foundation for historic Democratic turnout, and we look forward to continuing that trend under new leadership. I’m confident that Sean and Kianna will be an asset to the party and a key part of electing Democrats up and down the ballot for years to come.”
