Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Jessica Velasquez released the following statement regarding reports of the Supreme Court’s draft decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization:

“If this report is true, the Supreme Court is planning to undo nearly 50 years of precedent, and prevent millions of Americans from safely accessing abortion and other reproductive health care services. 

“Regardless of what happens at the nation level, we must remember that abortion will remain legal in New Mexico because of the hard work of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Democratic legislators, who worked to repeal outdated laws that would have immediately criminalized the right to choose. Now more than ever, it is essential that we continue to elect Democratic leaders who will ensure that New Mexico remains a safe haven for those seeking critical medical care and fight to re-establish the right to choose nationwide.”
