Today millions of Americans head to the polls for the final day of voting in the 2020 Election. Already over 770,000 New Mexicans have cast their ballots either absentee or through early voting. Democrats currently lead Republicans by more than 100,000 votes in New Mexico.
In recent months Republicans have repeatedly claimed that full election results should be available within hours of polls closing, an impossible and historically inaccurate request. While we look forward to the results of this election, we also recognize that this surge in absentee voting may affect the time it takes to count ballots. The Democratic Party of New Mexico is committed to respecting the electoral process in order to ensure the integrity of our elections.
Additionally, as COVID-19 cases continue to spike, the Democratic Party of New Mexico encourages those who are voting today to take precautions such as wearing masks and staying distant from others.
DPNM Chair Marg Elliston released the following statement regarding election day:
“As Democrats, we are proud to see record early and absentee voting in New Mexico and across the nation. We are committed to respecting the electoral process, and we understand that given the unprecedented nature of this election, results may not be available tonight. It is essential that we allow time for all legally cast ballots to be counted. We continue to encourage all voters to make a plan and get to the polls.”
