DPNM Statement on First CD-1 Debate

Candidates for Congress in New Mexico’s first Congressional District participated in the first televised debate of the election today on KOB.

During the debate Representative Melanie Stansbury laid out a clear vision for how she would fight to uplift the voices of New Mexican families. A lifelong Democrat and Albuquerque-native, Representative Stansbury has  worked in communities across the state as a researcher and STEM educator and at the national level as a former staffer in the White House and U.S. Senate. In 2018, she flipped House District 28 and became the first woman and the first Democrat to represent the district. Representative Stansbury has made it clear throughout her campaign that she is a proud Democrat who is ready to head to DC to uplift the voices of New Mexicans and work with President Biden to raise the minimum wage, create opportunities for affordable and accessible healthcare, and pass a comprehensive infrastructure bill.

Republican Mark Moores, on the other hand, spent most of the debate trying and failing to land false attacks against Representative Stansbury. Instead of addressing the issues or his own record, he repeated debunked claims from his television ads.

“Tonight’s debate was a clear victory for Melanie Stansbury, and voters got a good look at her record of delivering for New Mexicans” said DPNM Chair Jessica Velasquez. “Mark Moores, on the other hand, spent the debate launching haphazard attacks with no basis in reality. It’s obvious that Senator Moores would rather spread fear and falsehoods instead of discussing the real issues.
