DPNM Statement on National Women’s Health Week

Women’s Health Week 2022 begins as the Supreme Court plans to overturn 50 years of precedent and destroy protections for those seeking an abortion, despite clear opposition from the vast majority of Americans

In addition, national Republicans are threatening New Mexico’s status as a safe haven for those seeking abortion. Just recently Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell confirmed that a GOP majority in the Senate could focus on a federal abortion ban.

Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Jessica Velasquez issued the following statement after the start of National Women’s Health Week:

“This Women’s Health Week, New Mexican voters are grappling with the reality that the Supreme Court is set to overturn the critical protections for women’s health enshrined in Roe v. Wade and open the door to a nationwide radical anti-abortion agenda that Republicans have been pushing for decades. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Republicans have now suggested that, if in control, they would pass a federal abortion ban that could override the will of New Mexicans. Reproductive rights are on the ballot in 2022 and New Mexicans will vote like it in November.”
