GOP Meltdown: Extremist Candidates for Governor Decry Vaccines While Divide Grows Within the Party

Last week leaders across New Mexico called on members of the Republican party to stop pushing delusional conspiracy theories about COVID-19 and publicly support vaccination efforts. Yesterday, Minority Leader Jim Townsend finally shared on Twitter that he “chose the vaccine” because “it made sense.” While Leader Townsend is showing leadership, extremist GOP candidates for governor continue to undermine life-saving vaccination efforts.

On Thursday, GOP State Senator Gregg Schmedes was publicly discredited by the New Mexico Hospital Association after using an out-of-context quote to diminish the threat posted by COVID-19. State Representative and gubernatorial candidate Rebecca Dow then took to Twitter to parrot the same misinformation about COVID cases, despite NMHA’s correction.

This isn’t the first time that Republican gubernatorial candidates have spread dangerous misinformation about COVID-19. Throughout the pandemic, GOP leaders have waged war against scientific facts, fear-mongering instead of supporting CDC-backed policies like Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s common-sense public health orders. So far, NONE of the GOP candidates for governor have publicly supported vaccination efforts.
