Recent Account in Fox News Shows Herrell’s Lack of Compassion and Leadership
In a recent op-ed for Fox News, Representative Yvette Herrell gave a xenophobic and islamophobic account of her recent trip to Holloman Air Force Base, framing Afghan allies as dangerous and criticizing the failure to “assimilate” to American culture.
Despite military personnel repeatedly reassuring Herrell that refugees had gone through “extensive vetting” and explaining that certain information was classified, Herrell’s account of her visit is laced with fear and mistrust of Afghan allies. She even goes so far as to suggest that Afghan refugees who have lost everything could be responsible for a 9/11 style attack.
In addition, Herrell criticizes refugees for not “assimilating” and suggests that they would be better suited to an area with “similar culture, language, religion, and geography.” These islamophobic and racist comments show Herrell’s inability to accept that we live in a multicultural nation, which includes many languages and religions.
Herrell’s disgraceful op-ed reflects more on her than on the Afghan refugees that have come to New Mexico seeking a safe place to rebuild their lives. We are proud to be supporting our allies, and this fear mongering does nothing but encourage islamophobia and xenophobia.
