ICYMI: NM GOP Chair Steve Pearce Disrespects Officers Who Risked Their Lives on January 6th

Yesterday marked one year since armed insurrectionists stormed the US Capitol in an attempt to prevent the certification of a free and fair election. As Americans from various political parties mourned the lives lost that day and emphasized the importance of learning from the past, Republican Party of New Mexico Chair Steve Pearce used his platform to downplay the attacks and disrespect the Capitol Police Officers who risked their lives to defend the United States Capitol.

In the 150th episode of his podcast “Inside New Mexico” Pearce called the rioters’ violations of federal law “small stuff” and claimed that they were simply “swept along by the emotion” of the day. Pearce then mocked Capitol Police Officers’ testimony about the dangers they faced that day, and asked, “Where were these Capitol guards who were there every other day?”

Since the attacks, the Capitol Police Officers Union has revealed that nearly 140 officers were injured. Injuries included concussions, rib fractures, burns, and the partial loss of a finger. In the last year, federal prosecutors have charged more than 700 people in relation to the attack, including more than 187 people who were charged with physical violence.

DPNM Chair Jessica Velasquez released the following statement regarding Chair Pearce’s statements on the anniversary of the January 6th attack:

“Once again, the Republican party is showing that they cannot be trusted to defend our democracy. Chair Pearce’s attempts to downplay the severity of this attack and to ridicule the Capitol Police Officers who risked their lives that day is shameful and un-American.”
