DPNM Chair Marg Elliston calls on Rep. Nibert to apologize immediately
New Mexico State Representative Greg Nibert was criticized this week for wearing a shirt that referred to Governor Lujan Grisham as “Wuhan Grisham,” a reference that both demonizes Chinese people and erases the governor’s own heritage. Representative Nibert was pictured wearing the shirt at an “open-up” rally, where he refused to wear a mask even as service workers and others nearby adhered to safety guidelines about face coverings.
DPNM Chair Marg Elliston released the following statement regarding the Representative’s shirt:
“Representative Nibert chose to wear an insensitive and offensive shirt, which promotes dangerous ideas that have been used to attack Asian Americans throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This sort of message is racist and inappropriate in the best of times, and is especially offensive in a time when we should be coming together to protect our communities instead of stoking division. Representative Nibert should immediately apologize to Governor Lujan Grisham and to New Mexico’s Asian community for promoting these things so blatantly and irresponsibly.”
