Mark Moores Blames “Both Sides” For Violence at the US Capitol

Candidates for Congress in New Mexico’s first Congressional District participated in the third televised debate of the election today on KRQE, during which candidates were asked about who bears responsibility for the January 6th insurrection at the US Capitol that left five people dead.

Despite widespread bipartisan agreement that Donald Trump’s extreme rhetoric and refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election incited these riots, Mark Moores refused to lay the blame at Trump’s feet. Instead, he repeatedly dodged questions about if Trump was responsible for the violence and instead blamed “both sides” for the riots.

“Mark Moores’ refusal to recognize the role that Donald Trump played in the January 6th riots is dangerous for our democracy,” said DPNM spokesperson Miranda van Dijk. “Trump’s extremist rhetoric led to a direct attack on our democracy from those who would not accept a free and fair election. By excusing that behavior, Mark Moores is allying himself with the same violent extremists who killed five people on January 6th.”
