GOP Candidate Blames “Both Sides” for Extremist Lies that the Election was Rigged.
During last night’s first televised debate in the race to represent New Mexico’s first congressional district, State Senator Mark Moores once again refused to answer directly when asked if President Joe Biden had won the 2020 election. Instead of disavowing extremists who continue to spread the kind of dangerous rhetoric that led to the January 6 riots at the US Capitol, Moores said only that Biden is the “current president.”
This isn’t the first time Moores has failed to disavow dangerous conspiracy theories. During a recent campaign event he refused to directly address the claim that the 2020 election was stolen, saying that it was “behind us.” Then, instead of recognizing Donald Trump’s role in inciting violence, he blamed “both sides” for dangerous rhetoric – even though the violent insurrection at the US Capitol that led to the deaths of five people was caused by extremist lies that the election was rigged.
“Mark Moores is playing politics instead of standing up for what’s right and disavowing the extremist rhetoric that has already led to a direct attack on democracy,” said DPNM Chair Jessica Velasquez. “New Mexico can’t afford a representative who is too scared to stand up to those in his own party who are unable to accept a free and fair election. Moores’ failure to accept the validity of the 2020 election and directly acknowledge Donald Trump’s role in inciting violence on January 6th shows that he is unfit to represent us in Congress.”
