Moores’ Silence on Violence Against Women In-Line with His Anti-Women Agenda

Moores Has Ignored Calls From EMILY’s List, Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez and Others to Speak Out Against Recent NM GOP Tweet Glorifying Violence Against Women

The New Mexico GOP tweeted a violent and offensive image this week, depicting Republican candidate in New Mexico’s first congressional district Mark Moores punching his opponent Melanie Stansbury in the face. The tweet prompted U.S. Representative Teresa Leger Fernandez (NM-03) and organizations like EMILY’s List called on Moores to denounce the tweet and make it clear that he does not support this violent rhetoric. Despite these calls, Moores has refused to address the violent imagery or denounce violence against women.

This refusal to object to the glorification of violence against women is the latest in a long string of anti-women policies from Moores. His record includes voting to criminalize abortion and against prohibiting domestic abusers from accessing firearms.

“By remaining silent in the face of the New Mexico GOP’s misogyny, Moores is complicit in the glorification of violence against women,” said DPNM Chair Jessica Velasquez. “This refusal to speak out is disrespectful to women who have survived violence and completely unacceptable in someone who wants to represent New Mexicans in Congress. Both Chairman Pearce and Moores have failed New Mexico women and shown that they are unfit to lead.”

“The New Mexico GOP’s depiction of Mark Moores physically assaulting his political opponent is dangerous and irresponsible,” said U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez. “Moores should immediately condemn this violent imagery from his own Republican party. Rhetoric that glorifies violence against women has no place in New Mexico and no place in politics.”
