New Mexico for All Launches Youth Engagement Initiative with “Back to School” Summit

Dozens of Young Voters Joined Rep. Ben Ray Luján, Teresa Leger Fernandez for Youth Summit

The New Mexico for All Democratic coordinated campaign today kicked off a youth engagement initiative with a “Back to School” Youth Summit that brought together dozens of voters under the age of 30 to hear from candidates and learn how to get involved.

Participants heard from Representative Ben Ray Luján and candidate for U.S. House of Representatives Teresa Leger Fernandez who gave brief remarks and participated in a Q&A allowing young voters to ask questions directly. Attendees were then split into breakout groups based on region where they heard from local leaders including candidate for New Mexico State Senate District 9 Brenda McKenna, candidate for New Mexico State Senate District 19 Claudia Risner, and candidate for Sandoval County Commission District 4 Alexandria Piland.

Young voters were also able to meet the Organizers for their region and learn how to take actionable steps to support New Mexico for All, such as downloading the Reach app, becoming a Campus Influencer, and signing up for digital volunteer opportunities.

“When we talk about creating a brighter future for our state, it’s critical that we are engaging young New Mexicans in that mission,” said New Mexico for All Field Director Nikki Otake. “So many young people have seen our futures threatened by the Trump administration’s economic, education, and environmental policies, and we are ready to stand up and fight back. New Mexico for All is looking forward to giving young people the tools they need to help elect Democrats up-and-down the ballot in 2020.”

“Thank you all for bringing your incredible energy to this fight for change in our country,” said candidate for U.S. House of Representatives Teresa Leger Fernandez. “I want to be on the courageous side of history, side by side with each of you in this fight. We have failed your future and the future of our planet, but we can’t right this wrong unless we have your generation in the streets, online, on social media, and at the ballot boxes. Together we will invest in a future of opportunity and elect new leaders this fall!”

“I want to say thank you to all of the young people who have stepped up over the last few years to be a part of the conversation,” said Representative Ben Ray Luján. “You have changed the way people communicate. You speak with such clarity on the biggest issues of our time, from reducing gun violence to addressing the climate crisis to reforming student loan programs. It’s going to take all of us to right the wrongs done by the Trump administration, and I’m looking forward to working with all of you to get it done.”
