ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After a historically successful 2018 campaign cycle and in preparation for 2020, Marg Elliston, chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico (DPNM) announced a transition in the Party’s leadership team. Executive Director Joe Kabourek will be stepping down in June after almost 4 years of service. During his tenure, Kabourek returned financial stability to DPNM, expanded party infrastructure, and oversaw a record-setting 2018 “New Mexico for All” campaign effort which resulted in Democrats sweeping every statewide and federal election.
Chair Elliston has tapped DPNM Political Director Chelsey Evans to serve as the next Executive Director as DPNM continues to gear up for the 2020 elections.
“New Mexico Democrats are on a roll and as a result New Mexico is on the move. Over the past few years, we’ve transformed our party into a year-round organizing machine. We will miss Joe, but thank him for his leadership and know that we are much stronger because of his efforts. With Chelsey Evans leading us into 2020, we’re in a great position to build upon that momentum,” said Democratic Party Chairwoman Marg Elliston.
Elliston continued, “With over a decade of experience – inside the party and in New Mexico’s labor movement – Chelsey knows New Mexico inside and out. Her experience makes her the perfect choice as we continue to fight for New Mexico’s families and work to elect Democrats up-and-down the ballot.”
“The Democratic Party of New Mexico has built a strong foundation for future success,” said incoming Executive Director Chelsey Evans. “I’m excited to partner with Chair Elliston, DPNM officers and our outstanding candidates to get real results for New Mexico’s families.
“Politics is a team effort,” said outgoing Executive Director Joe Kabourek. “Working together with DPNM officers, Democratic candidates, their campaign teams, and activists across our state, we’ve transformed Democratic politics in New Mexico. There’s still so much more to do in the fight to build a New Mexico for all and Chelsey Evans is the perfect choice to lead New Mexico Democrats to the next level.”
