Last night, the New Mexico House passed HB 84, a bill that would enact automatic voter registration at the MVD and elsewhere, and HB 86, a bill that would allow voter registration until and on Election Day. Marg Elliston, Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico, released this statement:
“The voting bills passed by the House last night are two huge steps forward for New Mexico. Unnecessary barriers to the ballot box silence the voices of thousands of eligible New Mexicans every election cycle. By modernizing our registration system and enacting same day registration, we get closer to real representative democracy.
“This shouldn’t be a partisan issue, which is why the dogged Republican obstruction (for this bill and many important debates) is so disappointing. We shouldn’t fear enfranchising more New Mexicans. I urge the Senate to take up this legislation promptly, which will allow our hardworking county clerks to begin to implement this expansion of democracy.”
