NM GOP Calls for Elimination of Critical Employment Benefits

The New Mexico House Republicans’ hypocritical demand for the elimination of critical unemployment benefits is empty political posturing. These benefits have been critical in helping families weather the economic and health crisis of the pandemic made worse by the failures of the federal government under former President Donald Trump.

New Mexico Republicans had no legitimate plans to tackle the challenges facing New Mexico during this pandemic.Their current demand to eliminate  unemployment benefits represents a continuation of their party’s failed approach to governing.

Just weeks ago, New Mexico Republicans showed their true colors by taking their party convention to Texas and pouring more than $350,000 into Amarillo’s economy, instead of supporting New Mexico’s workers and small businesses.

In contrast, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Democratic leaders across the state have delivered targeted relief to communities in New Mexico that need it most. Democrats delivered $400 million in low-interest loans and $200 million in grants to small businesses that took a financial hit during the pandemic. In addition, Democrats delivered $600 personal income tax rebates for hundreds of thousands of front-line workers. As a result of Governor Lujan Grisham’s leadership and swift action, New Mexico is well positioned for a strong economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

‚ÄúOnce again New Mexico Republicans‚Äô callous behavior shows that their party is out-of-touch with the everyday plight of New Mexico families and small businesses brought on by this pandemic,‚ÄĚ said DPNM Chair Jessica Velazquez. ‚ÄúNew Mexicans can continue to count on Democrats to continue to deliver for all New Mexicans.
