NM GOP Stoops To New Low By Mischaracterizing Sexual Harassment Investigation For Political Points

The New Mexico GOP yesterday released a false statement accusing Senator Jeff Steinborn of sexually harassing Animal Protection of New Mexico lobbyist Laura Bonar. The attack mischaracterized a bipartisan investigation and ignored Ms. Bonar’s statement clearing the Senator of misconduct.

The New Mexico GOP took a quote from an unrelated investigation in 2018 out of context, and ignored an independent investigation which cleared Senator Steinborn of misconduct. They also left out the fact that the bipartisan Senate leadership unanimously decided to drop any further investigation based on these results.

Ms. Bonar has released a statement through her attorney saying, “Laura can (and does) authoritatively state that she was never sexually harassed by Jeff Steinborn.”

“The New Mexico GOP is trying to twist a thorough investigation that cleared Senator Steinborn of wrongdoing into a partisan coverup in order to score political points.” said DPNM Chair Marg Elliston. “This is a sad attempt to create controversy, because they know they can’t win on the issues. Instead of misrepresenting the words of a bipartisan committee to justify their attacks, the New Mexico GOP should focus on the bread and butter issues that matter most to New Mexicans.”
