In response to New Mexico’s successful reopening today, the Republican Party of New Mexico tweeted that a Republican leader “would have never shut [the state] down” during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s quick action to address the pandemic is credited with saving 15,000 New Mexican lives. Republican leadership during the pandemic would have led to more than 1.8 million infections, six times the number of hospitalizations and four times the number of deaths from the pandemic in New Mexico.
“Republicans have made it clear that they would have sacrificed thousands of lives to COVID-19, if they were in office last year,” said DPNM Chair Jessica Velasquez. “This kind of reckless and dangerous policy is exactly why we cannot afford to elect a Republican governor in 2022. When it’s time to make the tough decisions, the GOP cannot be trusted to put New Mexicans first.”
