Obamacareā€”Good News for People with Disabilities

If you are a person with disabilities and need health care coverage, the Affordable Care Act, or ‘Obamacare,’ is good news for you. Soon you can use the new health care marketplace to find health care coverageā€”at lower costs than ever beforeā€”and insurance providers can’t deny you coverage for pre-existing conditions.Ā The Ā marketplaces, or exchanges, go online inĀ just fifteen days from today, on October 1, 2013, with coverage beginning on January 1, 2014.
Whether youā€™re uninsured, youā€™ve been denied coverage in the past, or you just want to explore new options, the Health Insurance Marketplace will give you more choice and control over your health coverage.Ā The Marketplace will operate in all states, including here in New Mexico, so no matter where you live youā€™ll have access to coverage.
In the Marketplace, you can compare coverage options based on price, benefits, quality, and other features important to you. You can choose the combination of price and benefits that fits your budget and meets your needs.
Open enrollment for Marketplace plans begins October 1, 2013. Coverage begins as early as January 1, 2014.

  • New coverage options:Ā Insurance plans can no longer deny you coverage or charge you more because you have a disability orĀ pre-existing health condition.
  • Save money:Ā The health care law expands theĀ MedicaidĀ program to more Americans, including people with disabilities. Medicaid covers many people with disabilities and some adults under age 65 with modest incomes. Besides free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid, you may also be able toĀ save money on your monthly premiumsĀ orĀ out-of-pocket costsĀ for private insurance.
  • Long term care:Ā State Medicaid programs will also be able to offer additional services to help those who need long-term care at home and in the community. To learn more about programs for people with disabilities, visitĀ www.acl.gov.
  • No more limits:Ā Insurance companies can no longer imposeĀ lifetime dollar limitsĀ on your coverage.Ā Yearly limitsĀ generally will be prohibited for plan and policy years starting in 2014.
  • Get the latest information:Ā Visit theĀ Individuals & FamiliesĀ page at HealthCare.gov and sign up for email updates.
