As Steve Pearce’s flailing campaign released a lackluster finance report just two months out from the election, it was revealed that nearly 20% of what he “raised” came from New Mexico taxpayers, who were roped into paying his campaign’s legal fees so he could put nearly $1m in cash from his 2016 Congressional campaign into his run for governor.
“I saw first hand the momentum and excitement for Michelle, Howie, and Democrats up and down the ballot while traveling the state with our Democratic ticket last week. Today’s numbers show clearly how much energy we have behind us going into November,” said Marg Elliston, Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “Steve Pearce’s dismal fundraising shows New Mexicans haven’t forgotten his far-right record and will reject him in November.”
In July, Pearce demanded taxpayer reimbursement of over $133,000 in payments to his high-priced legal counsel:
