Steve Pearce continues to feign support for hardworking educators in a false new ad, but he can’t hide from a record of video, votes, and statements in support of the failed policies of the last eight years that are anti-educator and anti-student. In a slick new ad, he continues to lie about important changes, promising to “let teachers teach,” “fix our broken test system,” while at the same time he dodges accountability when it comes to standing up for New Mexico schools, students, and educators.
“Steve Pearce can’t be trusted, but his deception when it comes to New Mexico education sets a new low,” said Marg Elliston, Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “On education, Steve Pearce has demonstrated time and again that he’ll back up the Martinez/Skandera/Pearce status quo and keep us in 50th place harming our children, families, businesses and economy.”
❌ Won’t commit to drop PARCC testing.
- Pearce wants to keep PARCC: “He has said he is hesitant to do away with the controversial math and reading test because educators and students have become accustomed to it.”
❌ Caught on video saying he’d likely keep “exactly the same” punitive teacher evaluations
- The system punishes teachers for taking sick days they’ve already earned. The New Mexican reported that teachers can be punished on the state evaluation for taking sick days even if they’ve already earned them.
- And it leaves New Mexico “struggling to keep schools filled with teachers.” The New Mexican said in December that “more than 800 public school jobs remaining vacant, a more than 60 percent increase compared to last year’s vacancies.” This includes nearly 500 teaching positions.
❌ Won’t comment on increasing classroom funding and resolving the historic education lawsuit Yazzie v. NM.
- NM In Depth Reported: “Lujan Grisham’s opponent, Republican Steve Pearce, still hasn’t made a decision about whether or not he’d continue an appeal.”
