Yesterday marked one year since armed insurrectionists stormed the US Capitol in an attempt to prevent the certification of a free and fair election. This direct attack on our democracy injured nearly 140 law enforcement officers and killed five people. On the anniversary of this tragedy, Americans from various political parties mourned the lives lost that day and emphasized the importance of learning from the past in order to move forward as a nation.
New Mexico Republicans, in contrast, remained entirely silent. So-called GOP leaders, including Representative Yvette Herrell, and candidates for governor Rebecca Dow, Jay Block, and Mark Ronchetti refused to even acknowledge the significance of this anniversary.
This deafening silence comes after a year of deflection and cowardice from Republicans across New Mexico.
DPNM Chair Jessica Velasquez released the following statement regarding Republican silence on the one-year anniversary of the attack on the United States Capitol:
“Republicans’ refusal to acknowledge this tragedy is abhorrent. After a full year of spreading misinformation, refusing to hold the former president accountable, and downplaying the severity of this attack on our democracy, Republicans have failed once again to condemn the violence that took place that day.”
