The DeSantis-Trump Extreme Agenda Would Wreak Havoc on New Mexico’s Schools, Access To Reproductive Care
Albuquerque, NM – Yesterday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced he would stump for “party candidates endorsed by former President Donald Trump”, including GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Ronchetti and U.S. Representative Yvette Herrell in Roswell this month.
DeSantis’ record as Governor is marked by an extreme abortion ban that makes no exceptions for rape or incest, a refusal to build consensus or work across the aisle, and discriminatory policies that have now cost taxpayers thousands of good-paying jobs and $2 billion in new taxes. It’s clear Ronchetti and Herrell are more interested in standing with DeSantis’ extreme MAGA agenda than with New Mexicans.
Despite Ronchetti’s best efforts to downplay his support for President Trump since becoming the Republican gubernatorial candidate, “the MAGA [devotee]” is running toward national MAGA leaders in an effort to save his flailing campaign that has shown New Mexicans just how out of touch and out of his depth he is. Just like his buddies DeSantis and Trump, Ronchetti refused to denounce far-right fringe groups and seemed to indicate the groups were unfairly criticized. Ronchetti – whose campaign said just months ago that he never backed down from his support for Trump – would bring the Trump agenda back to New Mexico that put the wealthy and most powerful special interests above the middle class and working families.
Herrell has long pushed a dangerous MAGA agenda in Congress – at the expense of New Mexicans. She refused to support the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal, voted against capping out-of-pocket costs for insulin and a remedy for the nationwide shortage of baby formula, and pushed dangerous conspiracy theories about COVID-19 treatments that put New Mexicans’ health at risk. Herrell stood behind former President Trump’s repeatedly debunked stolen election conspiracy theories, voting to overturn the certification of the 2020 presidential election, and cozied up to far-right, anti-democratic leaders such as convicted insurrectionist Couy Griffin.
“By campaigning with Ron DeSantis, Mark Ronchetti and Yvette Herrell have said the quiet part out loud: they fully intend to bring extreme Trump policies here to New Mexico,” said DPNM Communications Director Daniel Garcia. “The Trump-DeSantis agenda would devastate New Mexico’s schools, undermine the state’s Democratic process, punish women and doctors for seeking and providing abortion care, and promote policies that benefit the wealthy and powerful at the expense of New Mexico’s hardworking families and rural communities.”
