RPNM Leaders Silent As GOP Commissioner Disrespects Fallen Officer with Unhinged Conspiracy Theory

Otero County Commissioner and Cowboys for Trump founder Couy Griffin horrified Americans across the nation yesterday when he cast doubt that Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick was brutally murdered during the January 6th insurrection. Griffin told CNN that he’s “not even so sure” that Sicknick or others were truly killed during the insurrection at the US Capitol. Griffin made the extremist comments while being interviewed about his role in the riots

New Mexico Republicans who have stood with Griffin before have failed to condemn this blatant disrespect for a Capitol Police Officer who died protecting our nation’s democracy. Prominent members of the NM GOP, including Congresswoman Yvette Herrell, RPNM Chair Steve Pearce, and Minority Leader Jim Townsend have all praised Griffin in the past, with Representative Herrell saying the endorsement of Cowboys for Trump is one she is the “most proud of” and Leader Townsend saying Griffin’s work is “critically important.”

So-called GOP “leaders” who are vying for the gubernatorial nomination, including State Representative Rebecca Dow, County Commissioner Jay Block, and Greg Zanetti have also failed to speak out against Griffin’s disgusting conspiracy theories or call on him to resign.

“There is no reason that GOP leaders should hesitate to condemn this behavior or call for Couy Griffin’s resignation as county commissioner,” said DPNM Chair Jessica Velasquez. “The GOP has stood by silently for too long. Their cowardice makes it clear that Griffin’s unhinged beliefs are not so out-of-line with those of their own party.”
