The Supreme Court of the United States today upheld the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for the third time, despite repeated GOP attempts to undermine the law in the courts. This ruling is a clear rebuke to GOP politicians who have repeatedly tried to reduce access to care, despite the many lifesaving benefits to Americans and reduced costs that have come from the ACA and the American Rescue Plan.
If Republicans had succeeded in their lawsuit, health insurance would have been ripped from over 318,000 New Mexicans could have lost coverage leading to a 147% increase in the uninsured rate. Yet, New Mexico Republicans continue to attack health care initiatives, railing against the ACA and voting against expanded access to affordable health care in New Mexico. So-called “leaders” Steve Pearce, Rebecca Dow, Jay Block, and Greg Zanetti have made it clear that their vision for New Mexico includes skyrocketing premiums and out-of-pocket costs, restricting access for thousands of people and leaving those with pre-existing conditions behind.
“The Affordable Care Act is once again upheld as the law of the land, but the New Mexico GOP continues to push their dangerous agenda to strip people of their health care,” said DPNM Chair Jessica Velasquez. “Republicans can’t be trusted to put the wellbeing of New Mexicans ahead of their own partisan politics.”
