Steve Pearce Lies About Trump’s Barbaric Family Separation, NM Democrats Are Taking Action

Steve Pearce left us guessing about his opinion on the basic rights of children for a week, even after Governor Susana Martinez endorsed the forcible separation of immigrant families. When he finally broke his silence, he failed to condemn the Trump administration for executing this practice and lied about the origin of this barbaric Trump Administration policy.

“When Steve Pearce finally crawled out of hiding to address the Trump Administration’s barbaric family separation policy his response was still further cowardice,” said Marg Elliston, Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “We could stop this cruel madness today, but this practice will continue forever if we all hold the same gutless position as Steve Pearce. Meanwhile, New Mexico’s Democratic leaders are taking action.”

Automatic family separation is a NEW Trump administration policy.

New York Times: “The Trump administration announced Monday that it is dramatically stepping up prosecutions of those who illegally cross the Southwest border, ramping up a ‘zero tolerance’ policy intended to deter new migrants with the threat of jail sentences and separating immigrant children from their parents.

[…]

“‘If you cross the Southwest border unlawfully, then we will prosecute you. It’s that simple,’ Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in announcing a policy that will impose potential criminal penalties on border crossers who previously faced mainly civil deportation proceedings — and in the process, force the separation of families crossing the border for months or longer.

“The new policy strikes squarely at parents who have traveled with their children, some apparently with the expectation that they would face shorter periods of detention while their cases were heard.”

The White House could stop this abhorrent policy TODAY but Jeff Sessions wants to “send a message to the world.”

Democrats, on the other hand, have jumped into action to fight this practice: Reps. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Ben Ray Lujan are going to the border…

NBC News: “A group of House Democrats of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Pelosi are traveling to the border on Monday to raise attention to the issue.”

NMPolitics.net: “Early next week, [Ben Ray Lujan will] be visiting the district of Texas U.S. Rep. Filemón Vela with several other lawmakers.”

…And have called out the Administration for their cruelty.

Michelle Lujan Grisham: “There are no substantive defenses, no policy defenses to [the Trump Administration’s] current actions separating families and taking children away from their mothers and fathers at the border […] It just is another indication that they cannot govern, they are not interested in doing the right thing, and they have nothing defensible about any of the current decisions this administration is making.”

NMPolitics.net: Rep. Ben Ray Lujan “called the Trump administration’s decisions ‘inhumane and immoral.’”

Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich have called out the Trump Administration and are also cosponsoring legislation to stop family separation.

Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich: “Udall, Heinrich Demand Trump End Cruel Policy Of Separating Children From Parents At The Border – Senators send letter to President & cosponsor legislation to keep immigrant families together”
