Taxes Are Due Today – And Republicans Want to Raise Yours

While Democrats deliver tax relief, Republicans have a plan that could raise taxes on 41.9% of New Mexicans

Today is Tax Day, and if Republicans had their way, New Mexicans’ taxes would be going up. The GOP has backed a plan that could raise taxes on 41.9% of New Mexicans– including many child care workers, teachers, first responders, and other working people across New Mexico.

But here in New Mexico, Democratic leaders like Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham cut taxes for every New Mexican – including small businesses, seniors, and working people  – delivered household relief for families, and ensured that the economic benefits of our booming economy reach every resident in the state. This year, more than half a million working New Mexicans were eligible for up to $1,300 in tax relief. Thanks to Governor Lujan Grisham and our Democratic legislators, the Working Families Tax Credit and Low Income Comprehensive Tax Rebate are worth more than ever and available to more filers than ever before. While Republicans try to raise taxes on working families, Democrats are fighting to reduce the tax burden on New Mexicans.

“Today is the last day to file taxes – and voters deserve to know that if Republicans get their way, 41.9% of New Mexicans could see their taxes go up,” said DPNM Chair Jessica Velasquez. “The contrast is clear: While Democratic leaders from the White House to the Roundhouse have cut taxes for working families and laid out a plan to give relief to households facing rising prices, Republicans are running on an agenda that would force New Mexicans to pay more.”
