Republicans Would Decimate the Affordable Care Act & Health Care for New Mexicans

DPNM Celebrates the 13th Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act

13 years ago today, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law, bringing health insurance to 30 million more Americans and forcing insurance companies to cover those with preexisting conditions. Since then, the Biden-Harris administration and Democrats have built on the ACA’s progress, strengthening its protections and continuing to lower costs for New Mexican families. But ever since, Republicans have constantly tried to undermine or eliminate the ACA and the access to essential health care it provides New Mexicans.
If Republicans were successful in their attempts to repeal the ACA and gut Medicaid:
  • 300,000 New Mexicans covered through the ACA will see premiums go up by an average of $6,400.
  • New Mexicans could lose access to substance use treatment or mental health care.
  • Families across New Mexico could lose free preventive care.
  • Costs for home care and nursing home care would skyrocket for New Mexican seniors.
“Democrats continue to fight to make health care coverage and prescription medication more affordable. Republicans have persistently tried to gut the Affordable Care Act ever since President Obama signed it into law 13 years ago, even though it expanded health care access and affordability for hundreds of thousands of New Mexicans,” said Democratic Party of New Mexico Spokesperson Daniel Garcia. “Even if people die as a result, Republicans would not hesitate to decimate the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid, all while fighting for tax cuts for the wealthiest.”
